ChatGPT Ads for Ecommerce: Where Retailers Actually Stand

Ecommerce is the best-served vertical on ChatGPT ads, and that is not a high bar. It is the only one with a dedicated ad product, a documented feed pipeline, an adtech partner and a permitted category. It also has three constraints that decide whether any of that is available to you, and the guides tend to lead with the opportunity.
What retailers get that nobody else does
A permitted category. Household and consumer goods sits on OpenAI's permitted list under ad policies v1.3, alongside local services, travel and experiences, digital products and education.
A dedicated ad product. Product feed campaigns, with feeds uploaded by CSV or TXT, hosted HTTPS URL, or SFTP.
An adtech route. Criteo became OpenAI's first adtech partner on 3 March 2026, so brands already buying through Criteo's commerce media platform can access ChatGPT inventory inside workflows they run today, applying benchmarks they already trust.
Conversion measurement that exists. Ads Manager Beta reporting includes impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, average CPC, average CPM and conversions, and UTM parameters persist on ad clicks. For a retailer this is the difference between a channel you can evaluate and one you cannot.
The three constraints
1,000 products
Reported beta expansion terms set a catalogue minimum of roughly 1,000 products and a maximum of 2 million.
That single line excludes most independent retailers. A DTC brand with 60 SKUs is not in this product, regardless of revenue or category fit. This requirement comes from June 2026 coverage rather than from OpenAI's current feed documentation, which does not restate it, so confirm before building if you sit near the threshold.
Items expire after two weeks
OpenAI's feed documentation states items expire after two weeks and recommends hosted URL or automated SFTP uploads.
The failure mode is quiet and it is the one to design around. A retailer uploads a CSV, sees products flow through, and delivery decays to nothing a fortnight later with no error and no notification. The campaign still looks like it is running.
Use CSV to validate the feed, then move to a hosted URL or SFTP before day fourteen.
Feed products do not appear in organic conversations
During the beta, products submitted through the feed are used only for Product Ads and do not appear in organic ChatGPT conversations.
This is the one most likely to be misunderstood at a strategy level. Submitting a catalogue does not improve how ChatGPT describes your products in ordinary conversation. Organic product mentions come from what the assistant can read on the open web, which means your feed and your crawlability are two separate problems and the feed does not solve the second one.
A retailer blocking AI crawlers while submitting a feed has made their products invisible in exactly the conversations that precede a purchase, while paying to appear beside them.
The correction worth knowing
Most retailer guides in circulation state that feeds must be submitted by SFTP and that OpenAI provides no API. That traces to June 2026 coverage of the beta expansion.
OpenAI's current documentation lists three upload methods: CSV or TXT upload, hosted URL, and SFTP connection. A retailer who scoped engineering work around a mandatory SFTP pipeline scoped against a requirement that no longer applies.
The no-API part still appears to hold. Three upload methods is not programmatic submission.
What a retailer should actually do first
Check the catalogue threshold before anything else. If you have fewer than roughly 1,000 products, confirm directly rather than building.
Check crawler access. Landing pages that block OpenAI user agents are a listed cause of ad rejection, and for a retailer the same block also suppresses organic product visibility. Ecommerce platforms frequently apply CDN managed rules the merchant never configured and cannot see from the repository robots.txt. We found exactly that pattern on our own sister company's domain.
Set up conversion measurement before launch. It exists, it is the highest-value setup step, and it cannot be backfilled.
Pick Clicks over Reach for a first test. A Clicks objective with conversion measurement produces a readable answer. Reach optimises for a metric a retailer generally cannot act on.
Budget above the floor. 25 USD a day is the minimum, and a two-week campaign at the floor produces single-digit conversions for most catalogues, which cannot separate a working channel from a broken one.
Bid sensibly. OpenAI recommends starting CPC at $3 to $5. Reported feed guidance is around 3 USD, with bids below 2 USD receiving minimal traffic. The auction is relevance-weighted and second-price, so the bid is a ceiling and product data quality affects selection.
What we cannot tell you
Whether ecommerce performs on this channel. OpenAI states no benchmarks exist across advertisers, industries or campaign types. The only substantive public disclosure is Opascope's fifteen-day single-account result of roughly 60,000 USD spend returning about 89,000 USD, a 1.49x blended ROAS at a 1.72 USD CPC and 2.35% conversion rate. One advertiser, one category, fifteen days.
Whether the 1,000-product minimum still applies. June coverage, not current documentation.
The full feed field specification. OpenAI points to a separate developer specification. Read that, not a summary of it.
When feed products enter organic conversations. Stated as a beta-period limitation with no published timeline.
Whether Criteo access changes economics. It changes workflow and benchmarking. Whether it changes clearing price is unpublished.
Quick answers
Can ecommerce brands advertise on ChatGPT? Yes. Household and consumer goods is a permitted category under ad policies v1.3, and product feed campaigns are available through Ads Manager.
How many products do I need for ChatGPT product feed ads? Beta expansion coverage reports a minimum of roughly 1,000 products and a maximum of 2 million. OpenAI's current feed documentation does not restate the minimum, so confirm directly if you are near it.
How do I upload a product catalogue to ChatGPT ads? Three methods: CSV or TXT upload, a hosted HTTPS URL, or an SFTP connection. Guides saying SFTP is the only option are out of date.
Do ChatGPT product feeds help my products show up in normal ChatGPT answers? No. During the beta, feed products are used only for Product Ads and do not appear in organic ChatGPT conversations.
Can I track ecommerce conversions from ChatGPT ads? Yes. Ads Manager Beta supports conversion measurement, reporting includes conversions, and UTM parameters persist on ad clicks for use in your own analytics.
Can I buy ChatGPT ads through Criteo? Yes. Criteo became OpenAI's first adtech partner on 3 March 2026, giving brands access to ChatGPT inventory through Criteo's commerce media platform.
Why did my product feed campaign stop delivering after two weeks? Feed items expire after two weeks. OpenAI recommends hosted URL or automated SFTP uploads rather than manual CSV for this reason.
