Field note: Context hints explained
Talk to us Talk to usContext hints are advertiser-provided descriptions, set at ad group level, of the conversations and topics where your product may be relevant. They are not keywords. They do not trigger exact matches and they carry no match types, so writing them as a keyword list wastes the one input you fully control.

What it reports
- Topic candidates
- Conversation themes your offer plausibly belongs in.
- Intent framing
- How a user would describe the problem, not the product.
- Over-narrow flags
- Candidates phrased as keywords rather than contexts.
- Coverage gaps
- Adjacent conversations your current hints leave out.
Worth knowing
Context hints are one of several inputs to ad selection. OpenAI documents that selection also considers the conversation’s context and intent, your landing page, and your ad’s title and copy. Hints steer matching, they do not control it, and no hint compensates for a landing page that does not match the conversation.
Common questions
What are context hints in ChatGPT ads?
Context hints are advertiser-provided descriptions, set at the ad group level, of the conversations, topics, or keywords where your products or services may be relevant. They guide ad matching without functioning as keyword targeting.
Are context hints the same as keywords?
No. They have no match types, they do not trigger exact matches, and they are not bid on individually. They describe conversational context, so writing them as a keyword list misuses the field.
Where do context hints live in the account?
At the ad group level, alongside your other ad group settings, rather than on individual ads or at the campaign level.
Do context hints alone decide when my ad shows?
No. OpenAI documents that ad selection also considers the context and intent of the conversation, the landing page, and the ad’s title and copy. Hints are one input among several.
