Continuity: Making the Page Answer the Question the Ad Interrupted

In brief

Map each ChatGPT Ads context-hint theme to one page promise and first screen when no search query is available for message match.

Message match on this channel cannot be done the usual way, because the usual way starts with a query you can read. Here there is no query, no search terms report and no conversation data. The only written record of what the visitor was talking about is the context hint you wrote yourself.

That changes message match from a copy exercise into a mapping exercise. Below is the method, laid out so you can run it on your own account this afternoon.

Your hint is the only surviving transcript

On Google, message match means the landing page headline echoes the search term, and the search terms report tells you afterwards whether you guessed right. Both halves are missing here.

What remains is this: OpenAI matches your hint against the meaning of a live conversation, and OpenAI's ad selection documentation lists "the ad's landing page, title, copy" alongside conversation context and "advertiser-provided context hints" as signals it considers. So the hint and the page are being read by the same system, against the same conversation, and you never see the conversation.

The operational consequence is that your hint is a standing description of the visitor you will get. Treat it as the transcript. If the hint is accurate, matching the page to the hint is the closest available approximation of matching the page to the conversation. If the hint is vague, the page has nothing to be continuous with, and no amount of landing page craft rescues it.

The Landing Continuity Map

The map is one row per ad group and seven columns. It is a planning document, not a report, and its job is to force a decision that otherwise gets made by accident when someone writes the page.

Column What goes in it Why
Ad group The name The ad group is the smallest reported unit and the unit that carries a hint theme, so it is the unit a page corresponds to
Hint theme, one sentence The situation the group's hints describe, compressed to a single sentence in the buyer's words If you cannot compress it to one sentence, the group holds two themes and should be split
The interrupted question The question you believe the model was answering when your ad appeared, written as a question This is the only column that is speculative, and writing it as a question keeps it honest
Page promise One sentence saying what the page will resolve. Must be a promise, not a description This is the commitment the rest of the row is checked against
First screen The literal elements above the fold: situation line, specific claim, proof element, one action Prevents the page promise from being true in principle and invisible in practice
Offer rung The single conversion event this page asks for Stage is part of continuity. A correct promise with the wrong ask still breaks
Break check Which of the four breaks below this row is closest to Reviewed monthly

A worked row

Take a compliance software advertiser with an ad group built from a renewal trigger.

Ad group: Insurer evidence requirement.

Hint theme: An IT manager at a mid-size firm whose insurer has asked them to evidence endpoint protection before renewal, who needs deployment across a few hundred laptops without hiring.

The interrupted question: "What do insurers actually accept as proof of endpoint protection?"

Page promise: This page tells you what underwriters ask for, and shows the evidence pack you would be able to produce in a week.

First screen: Situation line naming the renewal deadline. Specific claim: the named artefacts underwriters request. Proof element: a real sample of the exported evidence document. Action: download the evidence checklist, email only.

Offer rung: Rung 3, documented answer. Not a demo. The visitor has a deadline and an unanswered question, and has not yet decided they are buying software at all.

Break check: Clean, provided the page does not open by defining endpoint protection.

Notice what the map prevents. The obvious page for this ad group is the endpoint protection product page. That page is relevant, well built, and breaks continuity, because it answers "what does this product do" when the conversation was about "what will my underwriter accept".

The four continuity breaks

Promise break. The ad promises an answer and the page delivers a product. The most common break, and the hardest to see, because the page is usually good.

Vocabulary break. The hint carries the buyer's noun and the page carries yours. If the hint says receipt chasing and the page says expense capture automation, the visitor does a translation step on arrival. This one also matters beyond the human reader, since the page is a named input to ad selection and the hint is another.

Stage break. Promise and vocabulary line up, and the only action on the page is a sales call. Continuity of subject with a discontinuity of commitment.

Evidence break. The page makes the right claim and offers nothing checkable. A visitor who has just been given a balanced answer by a model is unusually well placed to notice an unsupported assertion, because they have a comparison in working memory from thirty seconds ago.

Running the map

Build it before the pages, in one session, with whoever wrote the hints in the room. Fill the hint theme column first for every ad group, because that is where the splits get discovered. Ad groups that resist one-sentence compression get split before any page work starts, which is cheaper than discovering it after two page builds.

Then review it monthly against the only numbers that exist at this granularity: impressions, clicks, CTR, average CPC and conversions at ad group level. You cannot attribute an outcome to a continuity break. What you can do is generate a hypothesis. A group with healthy CTR and poor conversion is a page-side problem, and the break check column tells you which break to look at first. A group with poor CTR is an ad or hint problem and the map is not the right tool.

The reckoning: continuity is not falsifiable here

Everything above is an argument, not a finding, and the honest version says so twice.

First, you cannot test message match against a message you cannot see. Any improvement you measure after a continuity fix is confounded with everything else that changed, and there is no search terms report to check your assumption about what the conversation was. The interrupted question column is a guess, permanently.

Second, the one published head-to-head on this platform cuts against the fastidious view. Search Engine Land in 2026 ran two ad groups with identical creative, one filled with Google-style keywords and one with full natural-language questions. The keyword group served far more, with slightly better CTR and slightly lower average CPC. One test, one advertiser, third-party reporting, not replicated. But it suggests the matcher is more tolerant of input style than the category's advice assumes, and by extension that meticulous continuity work may be earning less than its advocates believe.

What survives both objections is the part that does not depend on the matcher at all. The visitor is a person who arrives with a question already formed, and a page that answers a different question loses them regardless of how the auction weighted anything. Run the map for that reason. Treat any auction benefit as unmeasured upside.

What we cannot tell you

  • What question was actually interrupted. No conversation data, no search terms report, no adjacency reporting. Absent by design.
  • Whether continuity affects ad selection, and by how much. OpenAI names the landing page as a signal and publishes no weighting and no page quality score.
  • Whether a continuity fix caused a change in results. Ad group reporting cannot isolate a page change from anything else happening in the account.
  • Whether tight continuity beats broad reach. The one published test on hint style points the other way, and no test of page continuity on this channel has been published.
  • Any first-party evidence. InPromptAds runs no campaigns and has no client data. The map is a method, not a result.

Quick answers

What is message match on ChatGPT Ads? Continuity between the situation your context hint describes and what the landing page resolves. There is no query to match, so the hint is the only written record of the conversation you have.

What is a Landing Continuity Map? A planning grid with one row per ad group holding the hint theme, the question you believe was interrupted, the page promise, the first screen, the offer rung and a break check. It forces the page promise to be decided before the page is built.

Should the landing page headline repeat the ad headline? Repeating the headline is the weakest form of this. The page should resolve the situation the hint describes, which usually requires different words from a 50 character ad headline.

What is the most common continuity failure? The promise break: the ad promises an answer and the page presents a product. The page is often a good page, which is why it survives review.

How do I know if continuity is working? You do not, directly. Ad group level reporting can show CTR healthy and conversion weak, which points at the page, but no measurement isolates continuity as the cause.

Does the vocabulary in my hint need to appear on the page? Use the buyer's noun on both. The human reader avoids a translation step, and hint and page are both named inputs to ad selection, though OpenAI does not say how either is weighted.
