The direct answer. OpenAI does not publish a review timeline. It states that applications sit in a rolling queue with high volume, that review may take some time, and that it is unable to expedite account review or ad review requests at this time.
Any specific number you have read for ChatGPT ads approval time is one advertiser's experience presented as a norm. That includes the fast ones.
What can be described accurately is the sequence, which steps run in parallel, and which of them fail silently while you assume you are waiting.
The sequence, and the step people miss
Approval is not one gate. It is at least four, and they are frequently described as though completing the first means you are through.
| Step | What it is | Common misreading |
|---|---|---|
| Account creation | Country, currency and time zone set. Irreversible | Treated as a form. It is the one decision here you get a single attempt at |
| Identity and business verification | Runs through Persona against your registered entity | Passing this is read as being approved. It is not |
| Account review | A separate review of the application itself | Frequently not known to exist |
| Ad review | Per-ad, ongoing, after the account is live | Assumed to be one-time |
Verification and account review are separate steps. Completing an identity check does not mean the account is ready to run campaigns. This is the single most useful thing to know before building a launch plan around a date, because the gap between the two is where people conclude something has gone wrong and start making it worse.
What makes it slower
Everything on this list is self-inflicted and avoidable.
Submitting a second application. Duplicates do not bypass review. They create confusion about which account is real and can slow the thing you were trying to accelerate.
Inconsistent documents at verification. Persona compares what you submit against the registered entity. A trading name on one document and a registered name on another produces a loop with a slow feedback cycle.
A card that does not match the entity. The payment card must match the entity and its country. A mismatched card is a common verification failure, so a personal card against a company account, or a domestic card against a foreign entity, is a rejection waiting to happen.
More than one person creating accounts. Only one person should create the account. Everyone else is invited afterwards through Settings, Users, Invite. Two founders each starting an application is a predictable mess.
Missing the Ads Admin role. If you cannot create an ad account at all, the cause is usually a missing role rather than a platform restriction. Someone grants it at admin.openai.com under Users, then your profile, then Direct roles. It sits with whoever administers your workspace, on their schedule rather than yours.
What is not the review queue
Two failures look exactly like waiting and are not.
The account name and logo step. After access arrives, the account name and logo have to be set in Settings, Account info. OpenAI's wording is that ads will not serve until this is complete. There is no error, no rejection, no warning in the campaign builder. The campaign sits there looking approved and pending. It is the cheapest failure on this list to avoid and one of the hardest to diagnose.
Reporting latency. Reporting lags delivery by up to seven hours, and OpenAI's guidance is to allow 24 hours before flagging a delivery issue. A campaign showing zero impressions on day one is not evidence of anything yet.
Between them, these two account for a large share of the "still waiting on approval" reports that are not actually about approval.
Ad review does not end
Account approval is the beginning of a recurring process rather than the end of a one-time one.
Individual ads are reviewed and can be rejected after the account is live. Check Status in the Ads tab, and hover a Not serving ad for the reason. Common causes are policy misalignment and landing pages that block OpenAI user agents or IP addresses. You can edit and resubmit, or request a re-review.
The landing page cause is the one that catches established advertisers, because the block is usually not in the file the marketing team controls. It can live in robots.txt, in a WAF or CDN managed rule, or in server-level IP blocking, and a CDN managed rule is served ahead of the repository robots.txt. We found exactly that on our sister company's domain, where robots.txt welcomed the crawlers and a managed rule was refusing them.
Planning around an unknown
Since there is no published timeline, the only defensible plan is one that does not depend on a date.
Do the free checks before applying. Registration country, category eligibility, serving market, the Ads Admin role, and the crawler check on your landing page. All free, all fast, all capable of disqualifying you before you spend six weeks in a queue.
Sequence creative and landing page work to run during the wait, not after it. The wait is the only genuinely parallelisable part of this process.
Do not commit a launch date externally. Not to a client, not to a board, not to a campaign calendar tied to a product launch. OpenAI will not expedite for any of those reasons and has said so.
If you are in a regulated category, add unknown to unknown. Financial and health advertisers go through case-by-case review with proof of licensure, and no approval rate or timeline for that path is published by anyone.
What we cannot tell you
The actual timeline. Not published, and we do not hold an account to measure it.
Whether it varies by market or category. Almost certainly, and nobody has published a comparison.
Whether the queue is getting faster or slower. OpenAI's high-volume wording has persisted through several documentation revisions, which suggests pressure rather than resolution, and that is an inference rather than a finding.
Which of the circulating numbers is closest. Several guides quote specific durations. None cites a source and we have no basis to rank them.
Quick answers
How long does ChatGPT ads account approval take? OpenAI does not publish a timeline. It states applications sit in a rolling queue with high volume, that review may take some time, and that it cannot expedite account or ad review requests.
Can I expedite ChatGPT ads review? No. OpenAI states it is unable to expedite account review or ad review requests at this time. Submitting a second application does not bypass review and can slow it.
I passed verification, so why can I not run campaigns? Verification and account review are separate steps. Completing an identity check through Persona does not mean the account has been approved to run campaigns.
My campaign is approved but showing zero impressions. Is it still in review? Possibly not. Two non-review causes are common: the account name and logo not being set in Settings, Account info, which stops ads serving with no error message, and reporting latency of up to seven hours. OpenAI advises allowing 24 hours before flagging a delivery issue.
Why was my ad rejected after my account was approved? Ad review is ongoing and separate from account review. Common causes are policy misalignment and landing pages blocking OpenAI user agents or IP addresses. Check Status in the Ads tab and hover a Not serving ad for the reason, then edit and resubmit or request a re-review.
Why can I not create an ad account at all? Usually a missing role rather than a platform restriction. Someone needs to grant you the Ads Admin role at admin.openai.com under Users, then your profile, then Direct roles.
